- I am working on a system design that would use a series
- of Pentiums at various locations and a series of Suns at remote
- locations. Each Pentium needs to communicate with a Sun.
- The communication will involve bi-directional digital
- communication and control information as well as voice signals
- passed from the Pentium to the Sun. [This is a speech
- recognition application: the Sun provides speech recognition
- services.]
- I would like to consider using DSVD modems to handle
- the communication interface. The install site would be in
- Great Britain. Can anyone help with the following questions:
-
- o What are some DSVD modems I should consider? I
- have asked for information from MultiTech and
- US Robotics already. Modems would need to
- be acceptible for International use (or at least
- useable in Britain).
-
- o Can the audio signals be easily connected to the
- Sun? Suns have audio in and audio
- out jacks on the back that use banana jacks.
- Would any other hardware be required?
-
- o What sort of audio hardware is needed on the
- Pentiums? Soundblaster? How would the modem
- connect audio signals to/from the Pentium
- audio interface? Would any other hardware
- be required?
-
- o If the Pentium initiates the communication
- to the Sun (presumably using Hayes commands to
- do the dialing, or using some API to accomplish
- the same thing), will the "voice capability"
- automatically be available, or would something
- else need be done?
-
- Thanks so much in advance for help/suggestions with any of the
- above questions. Please email responses to: ric@sri.com
- and/or post to the newsgroup.
